Terror in the Forest
Boundless Session Two
Links:
Welcome to session two of Boundless! A bit of bookkeeping before we begin; I’m going to shoot for a regular Tuesday and Thursday release, with occasional Saturday releases. A set schedule will help me with keeping my priorities in order and managing family, work, and my love of TRPGS. Also, RP recently found his Spark Tables! One of the best tools for Solo RPGS. Quick note: Seasons are 3 months, Watches are 8 hours, and Stretches are ~10 minutes in Boundless.
With the Spark tables, the forest is called Greenstand. The weather is Storm-lit, and a heavy dew covers the land.
Day 4
Dorn wakes at the perimeter of the Greenstand. A breaking storm lights the area in regular intervals. A heavy saturation of dew on the ground will be making tracking difficult.
Delve: Greenstand
Setup-Hoping to hunt for supplies and, hopefully, profit.
Day 4: 1st Stretch Explore Action: Even-2 Hits
The edge of the forest offers little game or danger. He moves quickly; pushing deep into the forest.
Oracle Fortune Roll: Are there signs of game? Very Unlikely-1 Hit Twist/Complication; Complications Roll Source-2:2 Noise, Pressure-6:5 Anger, Cost-2:5 Hope, Fallout-5:3 Revealed
While searching for animal tracks, Dorn finds a trail. Feeling hopeful, he uses his hunting skills to follow deeper into the forest. His mood drops as the trail turns crimson from blood. A twig snaps ahead of the foreboding marks, and he sees eyes in the shadow. Eyes full of anger; something is in these woods, and it has found him.
Twelve Entries in the bestiary, so let’s roll a D12 for what is in these woods; 3 Thorn Mouth
What appears to be a beautiful woman steps out of the shadows, but something is off. Skin too pale; eyes like black ichor. It Screams (1D-2 Summon two Pallid Hounds). He hears the sound of multiple things running. Dorn opts to move back and put some space between them. She/it does not follow, but two rotting beasts charge into view. As the monsters close in, one Screeches at him. His Kelmora blood turns to ice. (Gain Fear condition) The other Howls (!1d-6! Summon six Pallid Hounds). The forest cries in the echoes of more creatures bounding in. Dorn sees no other option but to run, dashing his hopes.
Agility Check-Good Position due to being close to the edge of the forest-1 Hit PUSH 1 Hit-Fatigued; Cost-3:2 Progress
Oracle Fortune Roll: Do they follow past the edge of the forest? Even-0 Hits
Mystery: Investigate A Lead Action: Very Likely with Good Position due to Encountering Monsters in Forest-1 Hit Gain 1 Clue-Setback 2 Cost-Lose the rest of his rations
With no care left for the hunt, he throws down the animal traps, his rations spill out; anything to escape. As he clears the forest, he looks over his shoulder. The hounds snip and bite at each other as they take his rations. Dorn doesn’t stop running, fear outweighing the fatigue. He must return to Slingby.
Four Days ago…
Once Thora was sure Dorn had left, she went to a hidden trunk she kept. Opening her precious stash, she looks over all she has left of her parents; a Moonstruck Blade, some Veilspun Threads, a Bloodsong. Unlike Dorn, she remembered her parents; Vaen and Avel Kaith; her real name, Lysh Kaith. They were Haoer’h, also known as druids. The church was hunting them after she completed her veiling; dying and rising again, binding a spirit like a shadow to her. Her parents gave their second lives to keep her safe, helping her to Slengby, where Dorn found and cared for her. Their sacrifice gave her a chance to live. Her spirit had tugged at her letting Dorn leave, but she could not reveal she was as capable as him yet.
Thora’s people, the Haoer’h, had passed on their knowledge of healing herbs and arts to her. She would try to use these skills to make some coin and listen to the town. Thora will learn where the town’s dwindling supplies are going.
She never cared much for the town, but Dorn loves his hometown and its people, even as they thought little of the two orphans scraping by. And as long as he did, she would protect the town as well. In this way, she would redeem herself for lying to him. Stashing her items on herself, she set out for the day.
Thanks for reading! I did not expect Dorn to immediately get himself into so much trouble so fast. I also had a hit of inspiration and decided to turn Thora Hrold, aka Lysh Kaith, into a full PC and try out one of the character backgrounds: The Fallen Leaf! I hope you enjoyed, and I’ll see you Tuesday. Shout out to my fiancé for being my proofreader. This would be far less readable without her.

This is great! The fallen leaf is one of my favorite background juggling between keeping their traditions alive but also trying to survive. Great pick.
The bestiary is no joke - running really was the only choice- dumping rations - very wise move that fit the dire situation well!
