Lost and Hungry
Boundless Session One
Links:
Hello! Welcome to part 1. Before we begin in earnest, I did a bit more setup. Seeing as Dorn’s Bonds is a companion, I rolled up Thora Hrold (Thora is the female version of Thor, “Goddess of Thunder, very cool!), who is younger, wise, but impatient. Both of us have a disreputable local reputation. Asked the oracle if Dorn had living relatives and got a no.
Using the Stronghold Setup to build out our home, I got a Prosperous Town using random rolls. Used the name Slengby (roughly translates to idler village), I had my fiancé do 10d4 rolls for town stats:
Supplies-0!
Hold-2
Influence-3
Morale-5
This is something to work with! Boundless uses three scales to track time:
Season-about 3 months
Watch-8 hours, Morning, Afternoon, and Night, use to track days
Stretches-About 10 minutes, to follow character actions.
The Mystery
Setup-Why does Slengby have so few supplies?
Dorn awoke, slightly hungry as usual. Slengby, despite the town’s good spirits, was running low on pretty much everything. Looking at Thora, the fellow orphan who has been following him for as long as they both can remember, he knows he’ll have to do some hunting for food (and hopefully some coin, too). Not trusting the same adults who let two kids raise themselves, he wakes her.
“I’m leaving to hunt for a day or two. Don’t get in trouble while I’m gone.” he warns.
“You should be looking into why it’s so hard to find food and coins here.” she replies sleepily.
“We have to have food in our stomachs for that.” he replies grimly, as he gathers his animal traps, long sword, shield, some parchment and ink for map making, and might as well take their crowbar. You never know.
His first stop is the local merchant, Einar Inga. (Knowing that Dorn’s debts are owing favors, I ask does Dorn owe Einar a favor? Yes and) With what little money he has, he needs some supplies to make the journey to the forest. He grabs a tent, some rations, and a waterskin.
“When will you and Thora pay me back?” demands Einar, “You two owe me 60 coins!”
“You know I honor my debts,” pleads Dorn, “Let me go on this hunt, and I’ll split my prize with you. Meat is only going up in price.”
Begrudgingly, the merchant agrees.
The Journey
Setup: Dorn has to travel farther than normal to find hunting grounds. Modest: Four Boxes on the Journey Track.
Day 1: 1st Watch Travel Action: Very Likely-0 Hits; Setback-4 Test Rations
Setting out from the front gate, Dorn starts following the main path from the village. As he is walking, his stomach rumbles again. Not paying attention, he eats far more of his limited rations than he means to. Sighing, he continues on.
Day 1: 2nd Watch Travel Action: Very Likely-0 Hits; Setback-6 Detour add a box to the Journey Track; Five Boxes
Meeting a Hunter on the road, (Is the Hunter empty handed? Very Likely-1 Hit, yes with a twist) they strike up a conversation about the forest. The Hunter is empty handed but offers the route to the forest he is looking for. He warns all he found was bones there. Being distrustful, Dorn doesn’t listen and follows the path he already was. Too late, he realizes he was wrong.
Day 1: 3rd Watch Make Camp Action: Very Likely 1 Hit; Gain 1D on next Travel action; Setback-4 Spoiled
Disappointed in the first day of traveling, he sets up his tent for the night. Checking the rations he bought, he discovers part of them is rotten. At least he ate earlier and is belly is quiet enough for a good night’s sleep.
Day 2: 1st Watch Travel Action: Very Likely-3 Hits-Fill 3 Boxes on the Journey Track; Two Boxes Left
A good night’s rest, and remembering the directions the Hunter gave him, allows Dorn to make some great morning progress. He feels good about the start of this day.
Day 2: 2nd Watch Travel Action: Likely-1 Hit-Fill 1 Box on the Journey Track; Setback-1 Weather; Strength Check-2 Hits; One Box Left
The temperature starts to drop rapidly. Cold wind bites him through his clothes. However, Dorn is born of Kelmora; the cold is in his blood. He grits his teeth and marches on.
Day 2: 3rd Watch Make Camp Action: Likely-0 Hits-Setback-1 Exposure-Strength Check-2 Hits
The cold only builds as night falls. Dorn sets up camp, and while his northern blood holds strong, he doesn’t sleep well in the cold without a sleeping bag.
Day 3: 1st Watch Travel Action: Even-0 Hits-Setback-6 Detour
Hoping to finish his journey, Dorn sets out in high spirits. He meets another traveler. This one also offers a route to take him to the forest he seeks. He is stubborn and still doesn’t trust others. Once again, Dorn finds himself taking a longer route than is needed.
Day 3: 2nd Watch Travel Action: Likely-2 Hits Fill 2 Boxes; Journey Complete
Back tracking to the route the stranger told him, Dorn finally finds the forest. Smiling and a bit upset that his two-day journey is already at three days, he is glad to not have to travel anymore today.
Day 3: 3rd Watch Make Camp Action: Likely-0 Hits-Setback 3 Thief-Lose a piece of equipment; odds Animal Trap/Evens Crowbar-6
As the night sky darkens, Dorn sets to making camp. While putting up the tent, he doesn’t catch the “helpful” traveler in time as he makes off with his crowbar. Thankful it wasn’t the animal traps, which would have made this trip a waste, he sleeps little for the night as he keeps watch for the thief.
I joked I used a lot of good rolls during character creation. Turns out, I did! Dorn has made it to the forest. Depending on how this goes, I feel we will find a clue towards the mystery of why Slengby is running out of/lacking in resources. Hope you enjoyed! I’m getting more comfortable with the rules and finding my flow.

This is very well done. This travel ended up being pretty harsh and the fact that you got those 3 hits near the end must have felt so gooood. Also the fact that you rolled both weather and then the setback for being chilled during the night was so perfect thematically.
I’m already invested in these characters and was truly rooting for them to reach the forest. Let’s hope they catch something worth some coins for the travel back.
Oh you got started right away with a stronghold! Super cool, I was not comfortable enough with the rules and world yet to tackle that. This was a very nice piece of fiction and a good representation of the rules.
